Avandia

Avandia (the trade name for Rosiglitazone, marketed by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)), is a drug approved in 1999 for treatment of type 2 diabetes. The product was used extensively until 2007, when a report in the New England Journal of Medicine linked it with studies showing an increased risk of heart attack. The patent on the drug expired in 2012.

In addition to heart disease, Avandia has been linked to numerous other health concerns, including:

  • Increased risk of stroke
  • Greater susceptibility to bone fractures
  • Excessive weight gain
  • Loss of vision and other eye disease
  • Low blood sugar
  • Moderate to acute hepatitis

There’s evidence that GSK knew of the heart attack risks and covered up what they knew. There’s also evidence that the company threatened researchers who reported any adverse health effects tied to the drug.

If you or someone you love has suffered injury after taking Avandia, GetLegal has the tools and resources to help you find skilled legal representation to protect your rights. Visit our attorney directory, look for your geographic location and find the best lawyer for your situation.
